Anybody have a "rule of thumb" regarding rock size a 60" NH tiller will handle without breaking tines? Been picking all rocks at least 3 inch in diameter, should I pick down to 2"?

Keith: I use a 60" JD tiller quite a bit in my business (plant nursery). I guess rock picking size might be influenced by what you were ultimately going to do with the tilled ground. But that said, for my purposes I would never pick a 2" rock. Maybe I'm just lazy, or maybe my soil is just so incredibly rocky that if I did pick 2" rocks there would be almost no time to do anything else ... but it's been my experience that any rock smaller than my fist doesn't present a problem for the tiller. Maybe my approach of leaving the "smaller" rocks accelerates wear on the tines, but I can assure you that you'll find the hidden rocks that are the size of a loaf of bread will be a more serious problem. Not breaking the tines, but bringing the tiller to a sudden stop. So, my rule of thumb is: fist size or bigger, it gets picked. ....
